In traditional painting, you often start with a monochrome under painting and build your values on top of it. It seems to make the colors more uniform to me.

Oh I see what you mean. Come to think of it, that's the method I used in a painting class, hehe. I guess under painting is a method to start on a painting versus jumping in and starting with many colors.
