Mountain Temple by jjpeabody Mountain Temple by jjpeabody
I really love how this came out.  I really took my time on this one with composition, lighting, detail, etc.  I also tried out a couple of different techniques.

As an aerial photographer, we constantly emphasize getting the horizon level.
This is a great piece, and I'm just curious about your reasoning for tilting the the perspective - while keeping the character vertical?
Is there a message or emotional mechanic going on here that I'm missing?

No, you're just really observant.  It was an oversight.

Coming back was never easy for Jalan.  And although he was greeted with open and kind arms, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he missed something out there, outside of home.

It was a beautiful sight to behold, he admitted; the temple clinging to the side of Granley Mountain, facing the Needle of the Heavens - where his journeys usually took him.

And though he could not see where the subterranian entrance was from his perch, he knew his job had succeeded His job was important.  He was commissioned by the Temple to ward the evil that resided below the Needle.  Once a year, for several months, Jalan would trek to the Needle’s subterranean entrance and cast a plethora of warding spells and magic webs; to keep the world safe from an evil most foul.

So to come home after such a long journey felt strange, foreign even.  He was used to seeing the wild beasts of the world, and not the city folk.  But glad he was to be home today.  For today was the High Friar’s blessing.  He would receive it and then be allowed to roam the lands as he wished, dealing with evil however he saw fit.

Today would be a grand homecoming.

Man, this is fantastic! I really love the world building aspect of this piece, aside from the incredible lighting, composition, etc.  What makes this piece really awesome in my opinion, is that I can fully imagine this being a real place in a real story. Fascinating really.

Glad you're happy with it! It really did turn out great with all of the details to entertain the eye, and they aren't too distracting from the piece as a whole. ^_^

What a gorgeous piece of work.
That lake down there reminds me of a certain lake in a videogame. It's really wonderful, the whole scenery.

No, not 100% painted.  I did use some images and textures.  The background was more like a matte.  The middleground and foreground was 100% painted with some textures overlayed.
