The Trail of Tears was one of the worst things I ever learned about growing up. This image depicts the hardship and the journey that the American Indians partook. I realize it was probably a lot harder and a lost worse than what I learned about in American History. No one knows how many died during the Cherokee removal. The last journey of the Cherokee took 139 days and spanned 1,200 miles.
The image didn't start out being this. However, as the picture developed so did the art.
The trail of tears was a terrible part of American History. This image does a very good job of setting the scene for how this atrocious piece of policy was put into action. The scenario is completely possible. A relatively small number of US troops escorted Cherokee indians West. This image blends several traditional painting techniques with digital tech very nicely. The thematic sensibility of this is driven by the leafless trees, the absolutely perfect color use, and the organization of space. This is one of my new favorite images from this time period of US history. It belongs in an exhibit with real history, mementos from Cherokee tribal family history, and well written factual accounts of the ordeal. Great work on the image, hope you will consider doing more historical work.
