Conceptual painting of a city that's built on water. I don't like the background of the city. It's too plain to me and not fantasy enough. Perhaps I'll call this a WIP. I definitely need more exp doing urban cities.

The atmosphere of the painting is very nice, the bridges and the way you used sunlight to iluminate the background are great!
As for your problem with the city: If you were heading for a fantasy less modern look try to break the square look of the buildings, add a few round towers and/or vary the size, form and number of the windows and the gaps between them. You can also add flags or banners in different sizes somewhere. The more symmetrical it gets, the more modern and "plain" it will look, less symmetry will loosen things up a bit.
If it should go in the direction of modern skyscrapers make some of the houses bigger or smaller to add more variation in size or add a few triangle towers. This should do the trick
